UK's EV charging points outnumber petrol stations

Updated: Jun 10, 2019

May 30 (Renewables Now) - Public electric vehicle (EV) charging locations in the UK have outnumbered petrol stations across the country for the first time, new statistics by Zap-Map show.

The EV charge point platform on Wednesday said the UK has 8,471 EV charging stations with 13,613 of charging devices as of May 22. While the number of EV charging points has jumped by 57% in the past 12 months, that of petrol stations is on the slide. A total of 8,400 petrol charging locations were operating as of end-April.

“This month’s milestone reveals of the rapid pace of change already underway as the age of the combustion engine gives way to an all-electric era with vehicles offering both zero-emissions and a better driving experience,” said Ben Lane, co-founder and chief technical officer at Zap-Map.

The UK currently has more than 210,000 electric cars, whereas six years ago they were just 3,500. Analysts forecast that by end-2022 their number will grow to at least 1 million in line with the government’s policy to electrify all new cars and vans by 2040.
